BOLT
Building Intentional Leadership in a High-Pressure Industry

Overview
Bolt is a global mobility super-app that operates in over 850 cities across 50+ countries, including South Africa, offering ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery, car-sharing, and micromobility services. It has invested heavily in Africa, positioning itself as a key player in affordable, safe, and sustainable urban transport.
Challenge
BOLT operates in a volatile, high-pressure environment where socio-economic, country specific polies and regulations, and budgetary constraints directly impact operations. Country Leads were tasked with managing diverse teams across Africa, balancing employer engagement, customer experience, and operational deadlines in unpredictable conditions.
The Regional Director recognised that sustainable success required more than technical oversight. BOLT needed Country Leads who could walk the fine line between task and human; leaders who could deliver results while fostering empathy, resilience, and cultural alignment.
Intervention
BOLT partnered with Leverage Leadership to design and deliver the Mindful Leadership Programme, customised through consultation with the Regional Director to ensure relevance to BOLT’s dynamic environment.
The programme included:
- Three-day onsite facilitation in Cape Town, focusing on Emotional Intelligence, VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity), and redefining leadership versus management.
- Skills audit to identify gaps in collaboration, adaptability, customer-centric focus, and strategic vision.
- 1:1 coaching to embed learning and support individual growth.
- A deliberate emphasis on LeverageForward - equipping leaders to filter and transfer insights to their team leaders, creating a sustainable leadership culture across the organisation.
Outcome
The programme delivered measurable impact:
- Country Leads developed self-awareness and empathy, recognising that leadership is not just about tasks but about people.
- Leaders applied tools such as situational leadership, emotional regulation, and prioritisation frameworks to manage high-pressure sales environments.
- A shift from purely task-driven management to intentional leadership, balancing deadlines with human engagement.
- Country Leads began to cascade leadership practices to their team leaders, ensuring cultural alignment and resilience across markets.
