Overview
Clothing Junction is a fast growing retail chain in South Africa, expanding from factory outlets into a nationwide value fashion brand. Known for its rapid growth and operational drive, the company recognised that sustainable success required more than sales numbers - it needed emotionally intelligent leadership. Partnering with Leverage Leadership, they built a managerial culture that balanced sales focus with people centred leadership.
Challenge
Clothing Junction’s expansion was remarkable: from 40 stores in 2017 to over 230 stores nationwide, employing nearly 1,600 people. The pace of growth, combined with strong competition from established brands, created a “do‑do‑do” mindset among managers and teams. While this drove immediate results, it lacked the deeper leadership qualities needed for long‑term sustainability.
The challenge was clear: teach managers to balance sales focus with emotional intelligence, ensuring they could lead teams effectively while maintaining customer‑centric leadership.
Solution
Leverage Leadership began with a business needs analysis, engaging in multiple online and onsite sessions to understand Clothing Junction’s unique environment. From this, a customised programme was designed, combining practical tools with leadership theory.
At the heart of the programme were hands‑on, in‑store interventions: role‑playing, simulations, and self‑assessments that helped managers distinguish between management and leadership. This was supported by tailored assessments and 1:1 coaching, reinforcing the balance between operational focus and emotionally intelligent leadership.
Although the programme was non‑accredited, it was structured around themes from QCTO qualifications, ensuring alignment with recognised leadership standards.
Outcome
The programme delivered measurable impact:
- Managers gained clarity on the difference between management and leadership
- Emotional intelligence became embedded in daily practice, improving team dynamics and customer interactions.
- Leadership assessments provided the CEO with actionable insights into individual strengths and development areas.
- The company strengthened its leadership pipeline, ensuring sustainable growth beyond immediate sales targets.
Participant Voices
Managers highlighted how the training shifted their perspective:
- "Understanding the difference between managing and leading has changed how I approach my team.”
- “The coaching helped me apply emotional intelligence in real situations, not just theory.”
- "Balancing sales with leadership makes me more effective and helps my team feel valued.”
Applicability of Learning
Participants consistently emphasised the relevance of the content to their work environment:
- Applying emotional intelligence in high pressure retail settings.
- Communicating feedback constructively to motivate teams.
- Building inclusive cultures that embrace diversity while driving sales.
- Using practical tools to sharpen strategic focus and reduce non value adding tasks.
