ROMH Engineers
Building Leadership Capacity

Overview
ROMH Engineers is a fastgrowing engineering firm expanding across South Africa and into Africawide markets.
Known for technical excellence, they recognised that sustainable growth depends on strong leadership capacity. Partnering with Leverage Leadership, they built a management culture designed to carry the company’s ethos into the future.
Challenge
ROMH Engineers was expanding into South African and Africa-wide markets.
Previously, the EXCO team had the capacity to communicate, advise, and supervise managers directly. But with growth came new pressures: senior executives were stretched thin, leaving a gap in leadership guidance and cultural alignment.
ROMH needed a management programme that could empower senior managers to lead the culture of ROMH in the absence of constant EXCO oversight.
Solution
ROMH turned to Leverage Leadership on referral from another engineering client.
We began with a climate study of the business, diagnosing strengths, development areas, and cultural dynamics. This allowed us to design content that was not generic, but aligned to ROMH’s values, ethos, and identified growth areas.
At the heart of the programme, we embedded foundational leadership concepts — decision-making, conflict management, communication, and accountability — cementing the idea that leadership is not reserved for titles but is a discipline for all. This approach reflects our philosophy of LeverageForward: building on what already exists, while equipping managers to sustain and evolve the culture into the future.
Outcome
The programme delivered tangible impact:
- Senior managers applied their learning directly in the workplace, from making decisive strategic decisions to managing conflict effectively.
- ROMH’s leadership culture was strengthened, with managers stepping into roles as culture carriers and future leaders.
- The organisation gained resilience and alignment during a critical growth phase, ensuring its expansion into Africa was supported by strong, distributed leadership capacity.
Participant Voices
The customised content resonated deeply with participants, who highlighted why the takeouts mattered and how they would apply them:
- “Self-regulation is essential in managing relationships, making sound decisions, and maintaining composure under pressure. I will introduce the Eisenhower principle to help the team plan and prioritise more effectively, and explore creative recognition strategies to boost ownership and morale.” – Boitumelo
- “Team and people dynamics exist in every work environment, and this learning will help me become an insightful leader through practical outcomes.” – Sibongumusa Nkosi
- “Emotional intelligence is key in managing diverse age groups. These takeouts make us understand the importance of responsibility and accountability. I will always look at things from the point of view of others — introspection from time to time may be necessary.” – Thomas
- “As a manager of a region, I need to establish a team culture that takes diversity into account. I will be more accepting and aware of diversity and how it can positively impact my work and team. Diverse teams need to be seen as a positive.” – Herman Mostert
Applicability of Learning
Participants consistently emphasised that the content was highly applicable to their work environment:
- Regulating emotions, prioritising effectively, and communicating feedback constructively in high-pressure settings.
- Applying emotional intelligence to team dynamics and courageous conversations.
- Building inclusive cultures that embrace diversity as a strength.
- Using practical tools to reduce nonvalueadding tasks and sharpen strategic focus.
They also noted that these insights would help them become insightful leaders — leading with empathy, accountability, and strategic clarity.
